review sheet 3b

You can rewrite 1+2=2^2...+2^9 as 2^0+2^1...+2^9 and that sum=2^10. Why does this work?
I don't get the connection between a and b/c.

Because (x^10-1)/(x-1)=x^9+x^8+...+x^2+x+1, for part b, you can just substitute 2 for x. you can get (2^10-1)/(2-1)=2^9+2^8+2^7+...+2^2+2+1, since 2^10=1024, 2^9+2^8+2^7+...+2^2+2+1=(1024-1)/(2-1)=1023. part c is similar to part b, you can just substitute in 5 for x.
